If you’ve ever thought, “Okay, but what if we got married with dinosaurs?” — Sarah and Graham would like a word.
Their Texas Science and Natural History Museum wedding in Austin was colorful, quirky, sentimental, a little nerdy in the absolute best way, and SO unapologetically them.
Which, if you know me, is basically my favorite kind of wedding to photograph.
A Wedding Day That Actually Felt Like Them
Sarah and Graham met in college while working together at the gym, becoming friends before eventually realizing there was a little more happening there. And honestly, you can feel that friendship between them.
There’s an ease to these two. The kind where they can be romantic one second and completely hilarious together the next.
So when it came time to choose an Austin wedding venue, they didn’t want something that felt like every other wedding they had attended. They wanted somewhere unexpected. Somewhere playful. Somewhere their guests could actually experience alongside them.
Enter: the Texas Science and Natural History Museum.
And yes.
There were dinosaurs.
Getting Married at the Texas Science and Natural History Museum
Located on the University of Texas campus, the Texas Science and Natural History Museum is one of those Austin wedding venues that already has so much personality that you really don’t have to fight to make it interesting.
The historic Art Deco architecture, massive Great Hall, museum exhibits and towering fossils create such a wildly fun backdrop for wedding photography.
Instead of guests simply standing around during cocktail hour, Sarah and Graham’s people got to wander through the museum and explore the exhibits.
And then there was the ceremony.
Because naturally, if you’re getting married surrounded by prehistoric giants, there is really only one appropriate choice of processional music:
The Jurassic Park theme song.
10/10. No notes.
When the Texas Weather Has Other Plans
Because this is an Austin wedding, Texas naturally decided to keep everyone humble.
Storms were in the forecast, which meant Sarah and Graham’s team made the call to pivot to the rain plan. But this is exactly why I am forever preaching that your wedding day does not need to follow a perfectly controlled Pinterest blueprint to be beautiful.
Things can move.
Plans can change.
Weather can weather.
Your job is to get married.
Our job is to handle the rest.
And honestly? The adjusted ceremony setup ended up feeling intimate and cozy and completely right for the day.
As a documentary Austin wedding photographer, these are the wedding days I love photographing most. I don’t need everything to be perfectly staged. Give me movement. Give me people laughing. Give me your grandma losing it during the ceremony. Give me your friends screaming on the dance floor. Give me the weird little moments you didn’t even know happened.
Give me the actual story.
Color, Personality & Dancing With Dinosaurs
Sarah and Graham’s entire wedding felt joyful.
Bright florals brought color into the museum, with an extra sentimental layer: their longtime college friend Elizabeth designed their wedding flowers.
And once the formalities were over?
The museum turned into one hell of a party.
There is something inherently hilarious and magical about photographing a packed dance floor while dinosaur fossils casually loom overhead.
It felt less like, “Everyone please attend our formal wedding reception,” and more like, “Come hang out with all of our favorite humans, eat good food, explore a museum and dance with dinosaurs.”
That is a wedding I can get behind.
Why I Love Unique Austin Wedding Venues
One of my favorite things about photographing weddings in Austin is that you absolutely do not have to choose a traditional ballroom or wedding venue unless that genuinely feels like you.
Get married at a museum.
Get married at your favorite restaurant.
Get married in a garden, at an art gallery, in the middle of nowhere, or somewhere that makes your friends immediately say, “Oh my god, that is SO them.”
Your venue gets to be part of the storytelling.
For Sarah and Graham, the Texas Science and Natural History Museum wasn’t just a cool backdrop. It created an experience for their guests and reflected their personalities — playful, warm, curious and a little unconventional.
And that translates beautifully into photographs because there is something to document beyond pretty decor.
There is a story happening.
