Some weddings are work.

And then some weddings are your best friend’s wedding, and you somehow have to see through the tears well enough to actually photograph the damn thing.

Melissa & Tim’s wedding at Hummingbird House in Austin, Texas was very much the latter.

Melissa is one of my best friends. She is also an incredible photographer herself, which makes being trusted to photograph something this important feel like an honor on an entirely different level. Photographing another photographer is already a special kind of pressure — photographing one of your favorite humans marrying her favorite human? No pressure whatsoever. 😂

But truly, this day was everything I love about weddings: emotional, intentional, beautiful without feeling overly produced, and completely centered around the people who mattered.

A Hummingbird House Wedding in Austin

If you’ve spent approximately five minutes around me, you probably already know how much I love a wedding venue with personality.

And Hummingbird House has SO much of it.

Tucked away in South Austin, the property feels like its own little garden oasis. There is greenery everywhere, gorgeous outdoor spaces, and that wonderfully weird, romantic Austin energy that makes you forget you’re still in the city.

It is exactly the kind of venue where I can disappear into the greenery with my couples, chase pretty light, and make photographs that feel romantic and editorial without losing the actual story happening around us.

And I have to give some love to Danny, the owner of Hummingbird House, because he is genuinely the absolute best.

As a wedding photographer, I work with a LOT of venues and vendors. The people behind a space matter just as much as how pretty the space is, and Danny is one of those people who makes a wedding day better simply by being there. Kind, helpful, welcoming, and actually invested in his couples having an incredible experience.

10/10 human. 10/10 venue. No notes.

Photographing My Best Friend’s Wedding

This is where this wedding becomes a little harder for me to write about without getting sappy.

There is something incredibly surreal about watching your best friend become a bride.

I spend so much of my life documenting other people’s biggest moments. I watch parents cry. I watch hands shake while vows are being read. I catch the little looks between couples that happen when they think nobody else is paying attention.

Usually, I enter these stories somewhere in the middle.

With Melissa, I already knew the story.

I know her laugh. I know her mannerisms. I know the people she loves. I know when she’s genuinely emotional and when she’s about three seconds away from saying something unhinged.

And getting to take everything I know and love about my best friend and translate it into photographs she and Tim will have for the rest of their lives?

Yeah.

I’m emotional about it.

Documentary Wedding Photography With a Little Bit of Magic

Days like this are exactly why my approach to wedding photography is so rooted in presence.

I don’t want your wedding gallery to look like you spent eight hours at a photoshoot.

I want you to remember what happened.

The hugs. The chaos. The people losing their shit on the dance floor. The tiny interactions happening in the background. The way your partner looked at you when you weren’t paying attention.

And then, when the light is beautiful and we have a few minutes to breathe, we’ll sneak away and make some art together.

That combination — documentary rooted, editorial inspired, hopeless romantic at heart — is where I live.

Because I want the beautiful portraits.

Obviously.

But twenty years from now, I also want you to have photographs that immediately transport you back to how it all felt.

Melissa & Tim’s wedding was such a perfect reminder of why that matters.
