There are some wedding venues that feel unmistakably Austin without trying too hard, and Hotel Magdalena on South Congress is absolutely one of them.

Amanda and Coady’s Hotel Magdalena wedding was modern, romantic, effortlessly cool, and full of the kind of moments I love photographing most: genuine connection, gorgeous design, a little bit of editorial drama, and a whole lot of people simply enjoying the hell out of being together.

Their wedding was so damn good that it was even featured by Wed Society Austin — and getting to see these images celebrated beyond their gallery was the cherry on top of an already incredible day.

As an Austin wedding photographer, Hotel Magdalena has basically everything my little photographer heart wants in a wedding venue: interesting architecture, beautiful natural light, greenery, texture, indoor and outdoor spaces, and immediate access to one of the most iconic parts of Austin.

But what made this wedding special wasn’t just where Amanda and Coady got married.

It was them.

Located on Music Lane just off South Congress, Hotel Magdalena somehow manages to feel tucked away while still being right in the middle of Austin.

The property has this dreamy combination of mid-century Texas nostalgia and modern design. It doesn’t feel like a traditional ballroom wedding venue — and that is precisely why I love photographing weddings here.

Instead of one giant blank room that needs to be completely transformed, Hotel Magdalena already has personality.

The trees. The walkways. The warm architecture. The lawn. The suites. The little pockets of light everywhere you turn.

All of those elements give me places to actually create.

One of my favorite things about a hotel wedding is how naturally the story of the day can unfold.

You’re not necessarily bouncing between five completely different locations before the ceremony even begins. Your people can settle in. Things can breathe.

And as a documentary-rooted wedding photographer, I freaking love that.

Hotel Magdalena’s suites also give us something incredibly valuable photographically: beautiful natural Texas light and thoughtful interior design.

Which means we can create polished, editorial portraits without turning the morning into a giant production.

That balance — intentional portraits alongside completely unplanned moments — is where my work lives.

My approach to wedding photography has always been documentary rooted and editorial inspired.

The venue’s Bobbie Nelson Room + Lawn combines an indoor event space with a spacious outdoor lawn, allowing a wedding day to move naturally between environments.

From a photography perspective, that flexibility is GOLD.

Outdoor ceremonies and cocktail hours give us beautiful natural light and greenery, while the indoor spaces offer a completely different visual atmosphere once the sun goes down.

And because you’re in the heart of South Congress, you also have one of Austin’s most recognizable neighborhoods right outside the property.

That means a Hotel Magdalena wedding can feel intimate and secluded in one part of the gallery and unmistakably Austin in another.

It’s basically a choose-your-own-adventure book for wedding photography.

One of the reasons I love photographing South Congress weddings is that this part of town has an identity.

Austin has changed a lot, but South Congress still gives us texture, movement, architecture, pedestrians, storefronts, city energy, and those quintessential little pieces of Austin that make photographs immediately feel rooted in a place.

And that matters to me.

I don’t just want to photograph what you looked like.

I want to photograph what it felt like to be there.

Years from now, I want Amanda and Coady to look at these photographs and remember Austin. Hotel Magdalena. Their people. The weather. The anticipation before the ceremony. The way everyone looked during the speeches. What the dance floor felt like once everybody stopped caring about the camera.

A wedding gallery should be able to bring you back.

Black and White Wedding Inspiration at Hotel Magdalena

Their modern black and white wedding aesthetic worked beautifully with Hotel Magdalena because it didn’t compete with the environment.

Instead, everything felt cohesive.

Modern.

Romantic.

Clean without being sterile.

Editorial without losing warmth.

It’s one of the reasons this wedding photographs so beautifully in both color and black and white. When the design is intentional without overwhelming the space, the emotion gets to become part of the visual composition.

And for me, emotion will win every damn time.

Wedding Portraits That Feel Like You

Couple portraits are one of the few times during a wedding day when I intentionally pull my couples away from everybody else.

But even then, I don’t want to spend an hour turning you into mannequins.

My goal is to give you enough direction that you never have to wonder, What the hell do I do with my hands? while still leaving enough space for the two of you to actually interact.

I’ll direct when you need direction.

I’ll fix the hand.

I’ll find the light.

I’ll tell you when something looks off.

And then I’ll shut up and let something happen.

I was incredibly excited to see Amanda and Coady’s wedding featured by Wed Society Austin as Modern Romance: The Peabodys’ Chic Black & White Wedding.

Having this wedding published felt particularly special because it highlighted exactly what I loved about the day: modern sophistication paired with genuine warmth and personality.

But publications aside, my favorite thing will always be delivering the full gallery to my couple.
